The US
Bureau of
Labor Statistics describes the pay of a pharmacy technician as growing
much faster than the average. From 326,300 technicians in 2008, the
need for technicians will grow to 426,000 by 2018- indicating an
increase of 31% over 10 years. If you have a pharmacy technician job,
you will often have excellent job security for the near future, and
most probably, beyond that even.
But why choose a pharmacy technician job?
Aside
from the job security it gives (which is by the way very important in
today's still-recovering economy), pharmacy
technician pay is a good
source of income. Looking at the national pharmacy technicians
payscale, a pharmacy technician receives between $9,07 and $12.94 an
hour, with an overtime rate of $13.22 to $19.88 an hour. In total, the
average salary pharmacy technicians get is $28,940 a year.
The
leading drugstore chains in the US who are employing pharmacy
technicians have payscale pharmacy technician salaries which are in
line with the national average salary pharmacy technicians receive.
Walgreens, for example, has a pharmacy technician hourly rate of $9.05
and $11.53 while its two biggest competitors, CVS/Pharmacy and Rite Aid
offer a rate of between $8.74 and $11.02, and $8.17 and $11.14,
respectively.
There are pharmacy technicians working in a
variety of different fields, and each of these have their own wage rate
pharmacy technicians can take advantage of. Those that are working in
hospitals receive a mean annual wage of $32,710.

In
health and personal
care stores, which employ the majority of pharmacy technicians, they
are paying $27,590 per year to their technicians. On the other hand,
other general merchandise stores that have pharmacies in them can pay
their pharmacy technician an hourly rate of around $12.65, or a total
of $26,310 annually.
There are variations in payscale pharmacy
technician employees may receive. This is obviously due to a number of
significant factors, one of them being certification. Certified
pharmacy technicians usually receive higher pharmacy technician pay
than non-certified technicians. Certified technicians receive between
$9.90 and $15.58 an hour. Non-certified pharmacy technicians who are
formally trained receive $9.69 to $14.20, whilst those who only have
high school diplomas with no formal training receive $8.90 to $12.34 an
hour. This is indicating that pharmacy
technician certification is very
important. The other major factor that you need to bear in mind is the
location of work for the pharmacy technician.
While it is
important, the salary is not the only aspect of this type of work which
attracts people to pursue a pharmacy technician job. If you're really
cut out to be a pharmacy technician, then it's a natural thing for you
to want to find satisfaction and fulfillment in your job, in being able
to help others each day. That is the core duty of pharmacy technician,
helping the pharmacist who hired them, and helping the customers who
enter the pharmacy with their needs.
